An animated portion of Talking Heads' performance of Life During Wartime in celebration of Stop Making Sense returning to theaters

Created in celebration of Stop Making Sense returning to theaters, this lyric animation is inspired by Talking Heads’ iconic performance of “Life During Wartime.” The video reimagines a portion of the performance as a kinetic lyric piece, with on-screen text styled to echo Pablo Ferro’s hand-drawn title cards from the film’s opening sequence.

The movement of David Byrne’s hands in this clip reminded me of wavelengths, which became the foundation for the animation’s visual language. That motion was translated into flowing, rhythmic line work and duplicated four times to mimic sheet music, reinforcing the song’s structure and tempo. I also blended in visual references from 1950s instructional dance sheets, using their graphic clarity and directional emphasis to guide motion and timing throughout the piece.
